Hunger Strike

Alice Paul was thrown in jail, and she went on a hunger strike. She was force-fed three times a day for three weeks, starting at the end of her 22-day hunger strike. Alice did not care how sick she got, she still refused to eat. This was due to the fact that she was first transferred to the prison's "psychopathic" ward where she was thought to be insane and she was brutally sleep deprived. Then she went to the prison hospital and was threatened to be admitted Saint Elizabeth's Hospital, which was an asylum, (a place they sent mentally sick people) as she was supposedly suffering a case of "mania of persecution". This did not weaken her spirit-said to be that like Joan of Arc-thus, leading to the force-feeding.
